Running in Spain

Bridge over the river Ebro, Zaragoza
Spain in late December:
When we think of winter sun in Spain our thoughts are that of warm sun on our face & tee shirts, well not quite. The temperature at 10am some mornings struggled to get beyond 3 degrees.

I'd packed my winter woolies and was off  to run and explore up close the banks of the Ebro river in Zaragoza in the province of Aragon - famous for it's huge Cathedral and huge cat fish!

I spent the first few runs finding my bearings navigating around the of Expo 2009 marvelling at all the new bridges and infrastructure which really showed the flair of Spanish design.

On the third run I decided to push it and do just over the 10 mile mark and run passed the Cathedral del Pilar in the centre of Zaragoza built on & around a Roman settlement from which the city gets it name.

Given I had no sat nav and my legs were holding up well I continued around a circular course following the river. It was only until I returned and plotted my route that I realised I had run 14.4 miles, the sunshine and the architecture it seems had distracted me.

I returned to do my stretches in the street before a shower and tucking into a hearty plate  for lunch of traditional Spanish white beans with spicy Chorizo & crunchy bread followed by grilled organic Aragon lamb topped off with fresh oranges and all washed down with a local wine.

Great nutrition after a long run but the flavour was exceptional, worth the exercise as the food just tastes even better!
